The_Mystery_Yellow_Room_Crime_thriller
The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux

Is one of the first locked room mystery crime fiction novels. It is the first novel starring fictional reporter Joseph Rouletabille, and concerns a complex and seemingly impossible crime in which the criminal appears to disappear from a locked room. Leroux provides the reader with detailed, precise diagrams and floorplans illustrating the scene of the crime.

The emphasis of the story is firmly on the intellectual challenge to the reader, who will almost certainly be hard pressed to unravel every detail of the situation. John Dickson Carr, the master of locked-room mystery, has his detective Dr Gideon Fell declare this as the ‘best detective tale ever written’ in his 1935 novel The Hollow Man.

the three imposters

The Three Impostors – Arthur Machen
The Three Impostors is an episodic novel by British horror fiction writer Arthur Machen. The three impostors of the title are members of this society who weave a web of deception in the streets of London—retailing the aforementioned weird tales in the process—as they search for a missing Roman coin commemorating an infamous orgy by the Emperor Tiberius and close in on their prey: “the young man with spectacles”.

The novel incorporates several inset weird tales and culminates in a final denouement of deadly horror, connected with a secret society devoted to debauched pagan rites. Inspiration for Stephen King and Alan Moore The Three Imposters is a tour de force of classic horror writing that continues to resonant with mystic power over 100 years since it’s first publication.

People of the Abyss

The People of the Abyss – Jack London
The People of the Abyss is a disturbing eye-opening book about life in the East End of London in 1902. Journalist Jack London wrote this first-hand account by living in the East End (including Whitechapel the infamous hunting ground of Jack the Ripper)for Several months, sometimes staying in workhouses or sleeping on the streets.

The conditions he experienced and wrote about are shocking but poignant as he demonstrates that despite the squalor and crime that the inhabitants of the ‘Abyss’ find themselves exposed to, the East-End Spirit of those caught in the grip of poverty and disease still manage to shine through.

The JBJ Books Edition of The People of the Abyss is illustrated with stunning period photographs and etchings and is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

fasting-cure

The No-Breakfast Plan and Fasting Cure – Edward Hooker Dewey
This volume is a history, or a story, of an evolution in the professional care of the sick. It begins in inexperience and in a haze of medical superstition, and ends with a faith that Nature is the all in all in the cure of disease. The hygiene unfolded is both original and revolutionary: its practicality is of the largest, and its physiology beyond any possible question. The reader is assured in advance that every line of this volume has been written with conviction at white heat, that enforced food in sickness and the drug that corrodes are professional barbarisms unworthy of the times in which we live. Lose up to 142lbs of excess weight, feel and look twenty years younger and regain your lost health!

how to write like edgar allan poe

How to Write Like Edgar Allan Poe – by Edgar Allan Poe
Many books have been written by those trying to impart Poe’s artistic technique for poems and short stories – both of which Poe considered to be the pinnacle of the story telling art but all fall short of coming close to allowing readers to really get ‘into the skin’ of the great man himself. However readers will be thrilled to know that there is no need for second hand tutorials on how to write like Poe as the great man penned his several essays – everyone included here in their entirety – that did just that. Collected for the first time in one volume, the advice you receive from Poe cannot but improve your own writing skills.
